REVIEW – “The New York Times is mostly a waste of time”

Does anyone still read the actual paper anymore? Well even if you don’t, you might be interested in an app that brings relevant parts of the paper to your iPhone right? The New York Times has released an iPhone app that attempts bring you all kinds of stories on a variety of topics from sports, to headline news in a simple, easy to use format.

The app itself is pretty simple to navigate. When you open it up you are taken to the “Latest News” page. This page gives you a preview, much like the previews in the email app, of some of the breaking news stories for the current date. Selecting a news story will take you directly to the full story within the application. From there you will find that it is easy to share the story with a friend through email, zoom in and out on the text, and also save the story for later viewing.

The menu of this application can apparently be edited in a similar fashion to the way the “iPod” application works. Unfortunately this feature seems to be broken if you are using the 3.0 OS update. I tried multiple times, even after a restart to edit the menu under the “more” page but every time the app crashed when I pressed the “edit” button. There is no word as of yet about an update to this app, but I am unsure if they even know that it is a problem yet. Fortunately this does not affect the functionality of this app because you can still access all of the menu options through the “more” page. It does; however, make the app more cumbersome, and less customizable.

One of the things that is painfully obvious is that the load time on this app is a little slow, especially if you are not on a Wi-Fi connection. This, at least in my opinion, kind of negates the purpose of this app. At least for me, most of the time when I am using my phone on a Wi-Fi connection I have access to a computer if I really wanted to get the news. There is, however, some caching it seems so the load time is significantly better if you open this app frequently.

All of those things said, this app does bring you the newest news on a variety of topics and also gives you an easy way to search through the stories. But while the core functionality is good, the implementation is not good at all. From slow load times, to glitches resulting from not enough testing, this

app just isn’t something that I would ever use regularly. I would recommend this app only for those that really enjoy articles from The New York Times, and even to those people I would probably recommend using some form of RSS reader before I would recommend this app.
